Who is a candidate for coaching (and can a person be "uncoachable")?
A candidate for coaching is anyone looking for transformation, open to change and willing to do the work to get there.
Whether you are:
A high-potential employee wanting to catapult your career
looking to elevate your leadership
interested increased confidence and resilience
wanting to start out in your career on the right foot
interested in uncovering your unique talents and how you might apply them
...coaching can truly change your life!
Through coaching, you will achieve heightened awareness of your impact on others and consciously decide how you want to represent your brand (because we are all a "brand" -- whether we realize it or not), and decide accordingly what you intend to do each day.
You make the conscious choice to follow through on your commitments.
Homework does not mean writing page after page in a journal...unless you choose to because you enjoy that sort of thing. At Optimism, Inc., we believe that coaching should not add a burden to your already loaded life.
When is someone NOT a candidate for coaching?
Not everyone is coachable -- believe these words.
You can't force an employee to be coached. It will be a waste of time and money, and we will not accept such a client.
Don't use coaching as a formality to "seal" the fate of an employee you have already decided to terminate. Better to hire an outplacement coach after termination as a true transitional resource. There are many coaches who do outplacement, however, Optimism, Inc. does not offer this service. Our organization is dedicated to high potentials.
If someone is not committed to the coaching process or does not want transformation. Clients need to show up on time for all calls with a willing attitude, and make honest efforts to follow through on commitments made, otherwise there is no point to coaching. Save your money.
If you're clinically depressed, or have another condition with unresolved symptoms which would prevent behavioral transformation, coaching will not have impact...Get the help you need first (whether it be counseling, medication or other support) so you are ready, willing and able to take action, and then coaching may be productive and powerful for you. If during a coaching engagement we discover there are factors such as these at play, we will suspend coaching temporarily or permanently (based on your situation and wishes) to ensure you are not obligated to complete a program you are not prepared to achieve. No judgement. We want you to have whatever support will help you, and we're not trained in conditions such as clinical depression or anxiety, and it would be unethical not to suspend the coaching. (NOTE: We can refer you to a coach who ALSO has clinical psychology credentials. That may be your best bet!)
You cannot force your spouse or partner to get coaching...though you may reeeeally to want to. ;-) If he or she truly wants coaching, then you can successfully refer him or her to a coach.
Sometimes a client is ready for coaching but there is a mismatch with a particular coach. A good coach won't take it personally and will offer referrals of alternative coaches who might be a better fit. Optimism, Inc. can refer you to a variety of certified coaches in our network should our service not be a fit for you.
