What's the difference between coaching an individual and coaching a team?

Coaching a team is like an intricate 3-dimensional version of coaching an individual.

It is not simply coaching multiple individuals and then rolling up results.

First of all, team coaching is conducted by treating the team as one system or unit which greatly reduce defensiveness, blame and conflict.  The team is focused on the goals and actions of the team as a whole.

Conflicts may still arise, but a trained coach will be able to point the team to areas where they align regarding what is truly important to the team.  The coach will hold the space in such a way that conflicts can be resolved with respect.

Team coaching is also influenced by the dynamics of the numerous "sub-relationships" between various team members.  It is a dynamic, intricate system.

You might wish to offer some members of the team additional individual coaching, however this is separate from (or in addition to) a team coaching initiative.
