Do you coach in person, over the phone, via Skype - How does it work?
Corporate coaching clients (individuals & teams)
generally begins face to face
followed by either on-site or phone coaching (or a combination).
(Skype or Google+ remote coaching is also possible,
but this avenue can have significant connection issues and is, therefore, suboptimal).
Most individuals prefer the phone as it maximizes scheduling flexibility for clients. Team coaching generally continues in person, but is based on the needs of each company.
Coaching engagements contracted directly by individuals/couples
Occasionally an initial in-person coaching meeting is possible; usually, however, it is conducted by phone.
subsequent sessions conducted by phone
(Skype or Google+ remote coaching is possible if a person is outside the U.S. and would incur charges by using the phone. Connection issues make this a less optimal solution).
Don't you need to see someone's face to coach them?
This is a common question, particularly among those new to coaching, but actually, most coaching is done by phone. A well-trained coach hears subtle cues - pauses, sighs, the voice dropping suddenly, sound of excitement, repetition of telling words, etc., and some coaches actually find face-to-face coaching distracting.
The phone offers the feel of privacy. There is a "just you & me" quality around the calls
Coaching by phone feels "safe" -- allowing the client to express him or herself fully. Sometimes coaching in person can be intimidating -- no matter how understanding the coach might be -- Having to look into someone's eyes, particularly when discussing failures, disappointments or tougher subjects can be very hard for some people.
Coaching by phone offers convenience. You can be anywhere, just pick up the phone & your coach is waiting. Make sure you call from somewhere offering the privacy and quiet you need to really focus, as well as a good phone connection.
